We offer several varieties of onions and potatoes. Our most popular onions are the medium yellow globe-shaped onions. Beginning in late August we pick up the freshly harvested produce from our grower partners in our own climate-controlled trucks. At our Canastota packaging facility the widely popular New York State onions are sorted, graded, sized and packaged into 1.5#, 2#, 3#, 5#, 10#, 25# and 50# bags and then shipped to our customers up and down the east coast.
In late August when we announce that the New York onions are ready things get really active around here. For decades our Upstate New York farm partners have grown the best golden cooking onions in the world. And we say that for a reason…”it’s all in the muck.”
Much of the agricultural land around Canastota, New York is nearly black in color and rich in nutrients. The locals call it the “mucklands” and it’s famous for growing perfect produce. This special soil is generally found in the upstate New York region south and east of Lake Ontario. Bogs and swamp areas were left behind as the waters of Lake Ontario naturally receded over thousands of years. In the 19th and 20th centuries, in an effort to create more arable land, farmers drained these marshy areas. The resulting soil is amazingly dark and tillable and consists primarily of humus. Muckland produces a variety of incredibly flavorful and highly nutritious
vegetables such as onions, carrots, celery, potatoes, cabbage, and lettuce.
